Hi friends! And Merry Christmas! I hope yesterday was a magical day surrounded by those you love!

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably still on a “Christmas high.” You’re hopefully still cozied up in your pj’s, lounging on the sofa and enjoying every second of your day off - truly defining the word lazy.

Am I right? If so, I picked the perfect moment to introduce you to this new blog post!

Christmas is over. Soon the decorations will be put back in their boxes + the tree will get tossed. And just like that, your home will feel a little more empty, a little less cozy and in search of its once charming ambiance from the plethora of soft glowing lights that once filled your home.

Sad, right? If only there was a way to keep your home feeling cozy all year round!

Well, there is. And it’s what the Danish call Hygge.

What is Hygge you may ask? Surely you’ve seen this word in the past couple years + especially in the winter months. Pronounced “hoo-ga,” this Danish concept cannot be translated to one single word but encompasses a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life.

It is actually a very important part of being Danish and considered a defining feature of their cultural identity. This national obsession with all things cozy is credited as one of the reasons why Denmark is always at the top of the list of the world's happiest countries, despite their infamously miserable winters. And recently, the rest of the world has begun to catch on to this endearing way of living.

Here at Ames Interiors, we truly believe that your home & environment influence your mood dramatically. Which is why we work so tirelessly to create beautiful spaces for people to reside.

So today on the blog we’re sharing our favorite 11 secrets to creating a Hygge like home. So you too, can dwell in happiness!

If you ask a Danish person, they're likely to tell you that candles are the most important part of creating a hyggelig atmosphere at home. Danes burn a whopping 13 pounds of candle wax a year per capita according to Wiking—more than any other country in the world! My family loves to eat by candlelight when we gather for holiday dinners. A tradition I would highly recommend trying!

Books are an incredibly affordable way of making a home feel cozier, as they can be purchased en masse without breaking the bank and give your space the all-charming collected look. Stack them on your shelves, pile them high by the fireplace, style them on your coffee table, or any hard surface for that matter! No option will fail you, but only bring you closer to a Hygge-like home.

Whether a chunky knit, fur throw or soft blanket, having something lush to wrap around yourself is a must! Drape it over your sofa, stuff them in a near by basket or bin or suspend them over a ladder. Really, the possibilities are endless! Moroccan poufs are great options for additional seating, but ultimately project a laid-back and inviting vibe. These cushy pieces beckon guests to gather around for a relaxing affair. And finally, an excuse to splurge on one of those big plush pillows! Add a few to your sofa and bed for maximum hyggelig ambiance.

Sisal and flat-weave rugs are great when it’s warm outside, but for winter, you want a little more pile. Nothing screams December quite like a pair of cold feet so chase away those winter blues with a extra cozy rug for the home! Shag, Sheepskin, Moroccan, Wool or Knit - it’s up to you!

The Danes are all about a hot soak. But what’s a bath without its necessary components? The ultimate relaxing bath has just a few must-have items: your favorite soap and sponge, a magazine, some candles (of course), a face mask, a bath bomb, bath salts, a scented oil and some bubbles, because why not? The trick here is to not just hide these important elements in a near by closet! But complete the Hygge-like look and display them in a bathtub caddy. Ultimately, setting your bathroom up for the perfect homely feel.

The Danish call it hyggekrog.

We’ve all seen those drool worthy homes with the large bay windows and cozy reading nooks. You know, the ones complete with beautiful cushioned seating and overstuffed with dreamy textiles? Well, if you have an opportunity to re-create the idea in your own space - do it and do it now! Otherwise, create the feel of a window nook. A couple of large, soft accent chairs and warm lighting will suffice. Just be sure it’s the type of space the cat will want to nap and you will want to crack open a book in. Maximum comfort is your goal!

Recognize that your guests are there to visit you as well as your home. So anything you can do to bring more of your sparkling personality into your interiors will make folks want to stay for longer. Use pictures as inspiration sure, but ultimately let your personality be your guide. Don’t be afraid to “break the rules” or do something different. Your home will feel more like you if you feel more at home.

This is pretty self-explanatory. Lots of plants just bring life into a space, and make it feel like the kind of welcoming place you want to spend an afternoon. Nothing is more relaxing and peaceful than a delightful afternoon in nature. Invoke the same sense of tranquility with forged, faux or store bought plants and stems!

Let your bedroom feel like an escape from the world or even just your long day of work. With soft sheets, a big duvet, a selection of quilts and a mountain of pillows. The pharase ‘the more the merrier’ applies here! I’m going to take a large leap of faith here and just imply that the Danish love linen ;) Just google “why linen bedding” and I promise you’ll be ordering some new bedding by tomorrow!

Intensify the cozy factor with an all-around neutral color palette. From textiles and decor, fabrics and furnishings, metals and wood finishes to paint colors - keep it mellow! May I quickly add, a can of paint is one of the most cost-savvy ways to transform a room. Though white walls have their place, a deep, dark colored room layered with lighting and textures, evokes the feeling of a cozy hideaway.

You know what doesn't scream cozy? Sparse walls. Nothing makes a home feel more lived-in and personal than walls covered in a collection of art and photographs. Bring life to your home through layers. Artwork, lighting, textiles, drapery, home decor and styling accessories! The main furniture pieces are only the beginning to a well designed and homey room.

So there you have it! How to create a Hygge like home in just 11 steps! I hope by implementing these tips into your own space, you find happiness + content within in the home.
